Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for art through her grandmother Denise. Her aunt was a nurse who worked night shifts so that she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay discovered through her example the power of art as a vehicle for activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through the arts. DuVernay was a child together with her parents in Compton was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer months and was motivated to make a documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she received qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She began her career working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to examine the garbage inside the house that belonged to a member of the jury. Her work left her dissatisfied by journalism and she decided to shift her focus towards the field of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight out of college as an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. In addition to PR, the company established several lifestyle platforms including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
